Artist Statement

My work is informed by themes of science, nature, time, and place. More specifically, how cultural and historical interpretations of these ideas influence our sense of identity and purpose. Through the exploration of various media, my creative process involves manipulation by burying, layering, and excavating natural elements and imagery.

The paintings in Forage are inspired by the craft and artforms of my multiracial heritage, which is American Indian, European, and Tejano. Each composition begins with the foraging of found objects; a practice I associate with Hunter-Gatherer societies. Elements such as seeds and flower petals are buried in encaustic medium and arranged into intricate patterns. Feathers are crafted to become talismans that are then juxtaposed with lace and floral motifs and textured surfaces. As I work on my paintings-from the act of foraging natural objects, to the resolution of a piece-I feel honor and a tangible connection to the cultures of my forbearers.
